This lawyer gives numerous examples of people blabbing in front of the police, thinking that they can talk themselves out of trouble. Same thing goes for for the child protective services. The only thing they should hear from you is "I need to talk to my lawyer".

I DIDNT DO IT
I got rear-ended at full speed and my car flipped on the highway. When the local cops and the EMT showed up, everything was kind and jovial. People were actually concerned to make sure I was OK.
Then Statie showed up. I forgot he was a cop and treated him like a human interested in my well being. When he asked “What happened?” When I said, “I looked up in my mirror while talking to my wife in the phone …” The later clause being an irrelevant detail, he said, “Was it a hands free device?” That was just enough to remind I was talking to an automaton, and went straight into fact mode.
“I was driving the appropriate speed limit. When I slow down as traffic required, but I saw the car approaching me from behind at full speed, I pulled my foot off my brake and turned my wheel sharply to the left to avoid impacting other cars in the event that he hit me.”
